Professionally,
Jon is a geologist in the oil and gas industry, and is responsible for
developing new gas fields and getting them into production.
He
has been flying since 1976 and has accumulated 3,000 hours in powered
aircraft and gliders.
Jon
is an instructor at the Lasham Gliding Centre in Hampshire, which is the
world’s largest. He is an accomplished cross-country and mountain pilot
having competed at National level. Cross-country glider flights of more
than 300 miles are made regularly using rising air currents called
thermals and his longest flight to date has been 500 miles. Mountain
flying in gliders can result in enormous gains of height using standing
wave air currents. Jon has been to over 22,000 feet on several occasions
over
Scotland, the Pennines
and the
Alps.
His main interests with
powered flying are aerobatics and formation flying. Jon has been with the
Turbulent Team since 1998 and has introduced many friends to the delights
of open cockpit flying in the Tiger Moths of the Tiger Club, including
G-ACDC, the world’s oldest, which was first registered in
February 1933
